As some of you know, we have had a number of problems (both related and unrelated to the magazine directly) that have led to the delay of the first print edition of 1097. We leapt before we looked when it came to our introduction to publishing, and I can tell you now that the learning curve is a very steep one. Our staff is dedicated, and fantastic, but they are unpaid, and all have full time jobs outside of the magazine. We have been forced to admit that, in the end, a monthly magazine both in print and on the web is just simply beyond our ability to produce.
We remain dedicated to building something unique both in web and print publishing, but we have had to reassess how we will go about achieving that goal. We have decided, unanimously, to scale back the print edition to a seasonal (4 times a year) basis. Beginning in December, the web edition will continue to be monthly, and we fully expect to produce the first seasonal issue in December as well. I apologize for the change in plans. Believe me that it is a bigger disappointment to me than anyone, but I believe it is the most realistic choice. We will be contacting everyone who has bought subscriptions and giving the option of full refunds in the next few days.
There is a bright side to this decision. Because of the decreased cost of producing a print edition only four times per year, we will be able to offer each of our artists and authors twice as much money for their work as before. All authors will continue to receive a print copy of the magazine, but we will no longer be offering full one-year subscriptions to every contributor. Again, I apologize to everyone involved in the magazine for my lack of foresight in jumping into something for which we were clearly not prepared. I hope that, as time goes on, and our efforts continue both on the web and in print, we can make up for all the initial problems. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ian Rose, Editor
